Tim and I got into the habit of having no routine while we were on our road trip. Now that’ll make your head spin a bit — the habit of having no routine. But it’s true! We had one suitcase to share (a big one, mind you) and a new hotel nearly every night. Routine just wasn’t going to happen. But for someone like me, who usually clings to routine, it was kind of refreshing. It felt good to just go with the flow and head out each day knowing where we were going to land that night, but not really planning much else.
On our second day, we woke up early to start the drive to the Grand Canyon. We had gotten lucky a few weeks earlier and scored a reservation at the El Tovar Hotel, which is a historic hotel located right on the rim of the canyon. It’s the kind of place that people book a year in advance, so we really lucked out catching a random cancellation.
When the hotel was first built, it was considered completely luxurious. Now I would say that it feels more like an old-fashioned hunting lodge. It’s dark and woodsy and there are plenty of creatures to keep you company. ;)
I could have cozied up under a Pendleton blanket next to that fire for the night, but Tim insisted that we go see the canyon outside. Ridiculous. Give me a solid 2000 piece puzzle and a whiskey ginger and I’m set.
Our room was located at the very end of a long hallway toward the edge of the canyon, which meant that we had a pretty sweet view as the sun was setting.
We left our gigantic suitcase in the room and made our way outside for the real attraction.
I’m convinced that the Grand Canyon is one of those things that looks incredible in pictures, but no matter how top-quality the photograph is, it doesn’t even compare to the impression it makes in real life.
I was also a little surprised how… unprotected?… the edge of the canyon is! One false step from a klutz like me and you’re out of luck. Later, in the gift shop, Tim and I spotted a book detailing all of the national park deaths on record. I stood back a little further from the rim after reading the inside jacket cover. ;)
Hope you’re having a great week!
