This month at The B Bar, we’re all chatting about the future. Specifically, what we’re doing to prepare for the future and what we think we should start doing to create a better future for ourselves.
As I’ve mentioned, my boyfriend Tim will be starting grad school in the fall. We’re moving to Austin in mid-July (I can’t wait to share our road trip with you guys!) and we’re both excited about the changes that this will mean for us. I will be pursuing a change in career, we’re moving into our first (rented) home, and of course, that’s on top of all of the other changes that come with a new city. A new gym! A new favorite grocery store! A new Sunday morning bakery!
Yes, I am already sad that we’re leaving our life in California. Almost every time I go for a run by the water, I incessantly remind myself that “I won’t have this for much longer” and “I should take as much advantage as possible.” Which is absolutely true! I also use our upcoming move as an excuse to hang out with my best friend allthetime. But in terms of looking toward the future, I am nothing but excited.
I am so aware that this move is going to mean big, positive changes in our lives. I’m proud of my boyfriend (for so many reasons, but I’ll stop myself from being annoying :)) and excited for what this degree will mean to his career. He is beyond excited to go back to school and that energy is infectious!
As, for me, this move feels like a new adventure. I always thought that I’d want to move to another city after LA (I never thought of LA as a place where I’d create a long-term home) and Austin feels like such an amazing opportunity. It’ll mean new friends, a new career path, a new home, and an altogether new lifestyle. For someone who is generally pretty averse to change, I’m shocking myself with my enthusiasm. But this is what I need! Have you ever made a change in your life and been so sure that you were headed in the right direction? :)
In terms of preparation (oh yeah, there’s a prompt!), it’s almost like right now it’s nothing but preparation. Moving is quite a lot to orchestrate, especially when it’s across state lines. I’m emailing people almost every day to make sure that I’m setting myself (and our little household) up for a smooth-ish transition. Thankfully, the people whom I’ve communicated with in Austin are unbelievably welcoming, helpful, and generous, which has been more than I could have expected.
Okay, now that I’ve written a novel, let’s talk about what I should be doing. I wish I could be here to write to y’all more often. (See how I snuck that little y’all in there — get ready!) I wish I could be as on top of my Instagram game as I was a few months ago, and I certainly wish I had already started sorting our things and playing the donate/keep/sell game. But to be honest, I’m happy to tone things down a bit over the next period of change, because it’s clear that I’m investing in a better future for myself.
Did you make it all the way to the end!? You’re my favorite.
