My mom’s birthday was last week, which of course meant scrawling birthday wishes in a card. I love writing cards (thank you notes included), because it often gives me the chance to really put some thought into what I appreciate about a friend or relative.
In my mom’s case, one of the many things I appreciate about her is her generosity. Not necessarily in money or time (though those things too!), but in her spirit. She strikes up friendly conversation with Starbucks baristas, smiles enthusiastically from the audience during every play, and sends emails of encouragement, sympathy, and thanks with regularity. She radiates positivity.
If you asked her, she would say that she does this because it requires almost nothing of her, and can make all of the difference to the person who receives it. Gah! Isn’t that a great lesson?!
We can all do this. It takes nothing to write “thank you” on a signed check at a restaurant, to compliment the girl wearing the awesome dress in front of you in line, or to smile at the man walking his dog as you cross on the sidewalk. These are little examples of positivity that we can send out so easily. They’re little, but they make such a difference.
