The past couple of days have been a bit tough– filled with more frustration and furrowed eyebrows than I’d like. So last night, as I was falling asleep, I got to thinking: How could I turn things around?
I generally believe that instead of complaining, it’s best to either change your situation, or change your attitude. And while I consider myself a positive person, things had gotten a bit, well, whiney lately. So this morning, I decided that today, I would give up complaining and negativity altogether.
It was time to change my attitude. Instead of being frustrated by the fact that we’re out of milk this morning (and as you habitual cereal eaters know, this can be really frustrating), I reframed my thoughts. “Well, I haven’t had oatmeal in a while… and I do have some greek yogurt and apples to throw on top…”
When I got home, my boyfriend asked me how my day was. My instinct was to reply, “It was good, but I actually didn’t sleep very well last night, so I was bit tired today…” but I tried something new. “You know, it was nice! I drank the most delicious latte on the way to work, and I got a compliment on my new lipstick.”
Of course, positivity can’t solve everything. Sometimes we have a bad day. Sometimes frustration and anxiety are best solved by a good conversation with someone who you trust. I get that.
But today, reframing my thoughts made all of the difference. Instead of spending time and energy talking about the things that weren’t perfect, I focused my energy on all of the small, beautiful moments that had been really nice. It was refreshing.
Hope you’re having a good week. :)
P.S. These are a few photos from our walk tonight– I swear that the beach could make any girl feel a bit more positive. :)
